A Blatant Disregard for Democracy: Condemning President Tinubu's Declaration of State of Emergency in Rivers State

On a shocking move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, removing the elected governor and cabinet from office. This decision is a blatant disregard for democracy and a clear abuse of power.

According to the Nigerian Constitution, the President does not have the authority to remove an elected governor or cabinet member. Section 188 of the Constitution outlines the process for removing a governor, which involves impeachment by the State House of Assembly, not a presidential proclamation.

Furthermore, the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State is a clear overreach of federal power. The Constitution grants states significant autonomy, and the President's actions undermine this autonomy.

This move is not only unconstitutional but also undemocratic. It sets a dangerous precedent for the federal government to interfere in state affairs, undermining the principles of federalism.

Nigerians must take a stand against this unlawful act. Here are compelling reasons to storm the streets in protest:

  • Protect Democracy: The President's actions are a clear threat to democracy. By protesting, Nigerians can show that they will not stand idly by while their democracy is undermined.

  • Uphold the Constitution: The Nigerian Constitution is clear on the process for removing a governor. By protesting, Nigerians can demand that the President respects the Constitution and the rule of law.

  • Hold the President Accountable: The President's actions are a clear abuse of power. By protesting, Nigerians can demand that the President is held accountable for his actions and that he respects the limits of his power.

It's time for Nigerians to rise up and demand justice. We must not let this unconstitutional act go unchallenged. Let us take to the streets, use social media, and engage in conversations with our friends and family to raise awareness about this issue.

We must demand the immediate reversal and revocation of the proclamation and the reinstatement of the elected governor and officials. Anything less is a betrayal of our democracy. 🇳🇬
